Two (2) players were honored during the ceremony with a moment of silence as they had passed away - #82 Mark Hatcher and #24 Ed Yardley;
25 years ago, this team set out on a historical season that had been so close to the championship in the previous season – the Wildcats made it to the Semi-Finals in 1992. The team had one (1) sole loss, to Brookfield 0-13 in week 2. The team beat, during the regular season – Schuyler County 34-6; Clark County 19-16; Knox County 21-0; North Shelby 14-0; Putnam County 13-6; Scotland County 36-6; Maysville 35-6; Princeton 34-7; and Gallatin 42-8. In the playoffs, the team met up against Hamilton in the sectional game – were victorious with a score of 12-3 – then against Tarkio in the Quarterfinal game-winning 27-6 and again the Cats played a familiar Tri-Rivers Conference school – North Shelby in the Class 1A state semifinal game-winning 28-0.
Upon winning the game against North Shelby, the Wildcats secured the school’s first-ever visit to the “Show-Me” bowl at Faurot Field on the Campus of the University of Missouri – the opponent for the state championship game was a private school – the St. Genevieve-Valle Warriors, a 5-time MO Class 1A state football champion.
The game took place on Saturday, November 26th, 1993 – (the first Saturday after the annual Thanksgiving Holiday). The winter of 1993 showed up a bit early, as the field was ‘snow-covered’.
It would seem the conditions were not conducive to a Wildcat Victory; but nevertheless, the Mighty Wildcats from 1993 withstood the weather, the experienced opponent, and came away from that experience as STATE CHAMPIONS. The final score was MILAN 19 and ST. GENEVIEVE-VALLE 12.
Every member of this team, no matter the personal accolade, played a huge role in this championship season and we, as a community – as a school – would like to honor this accomplishment by inducting the ENTIRE team to the 1st class of the Milan C-2 Athletic Hall of Fame. This team will be permanently honored in the Milan Gymnasium with a 3” X 4” picture posted on the east wall in the gym and a permanent display in the Milan C-2 Athletic Hall of Fame – located in the gym lobby.
The Milan Athletic Booster Club has provided commemorative T-shirts for each member of the team.
Thank you gentlemen and your team was already etched in the history of the Milan Community; but now, it will be permanently remembered as the inaugural inductee of the Milan C-2 Athletic Hall of Fame.
